How do
activists and scholars conceive of collective action and
struggles for social change on a global level? In this course we
discuss challenges and gaps that arise within social movement
studies the way they are commonly undertaken in Western
academia. We ask which struggles, which forms of resistance come
to the fore when we move beyond mainstream Eurocentric
approaches and learn from the rich experiences of the majority
world, building on a long history of anti-colonial,
anti-capitalist and anti-racist struggles. Theoretical
considerations will be complemented by concrete case studies on
struggles for social justice.
